Is banning FTV really the way to "stop" our youth from getting corrupted? Are we so clean? Reality check.... Expand

Well Pk.Sundar, Thank you for spending such time on writing a comment.  I apologize if some of my words were obscene. But in no way i find it colorful as you see it. The objective of this post was to say that "blindly" putting a Ban on a channel without a second thought is not the way to handle things.

"Let’s say that a man has three sons and that two of them have gone astray. If we were to follow The Blue Genius’ argument then we should let the other too go bad!"

Now, what kind of logic is this? You are talking like "Bread is the mother of steam engine". On control, the Govt. can do what it want. On what it likes. Why object the Ban? Simply because they must not decide what we want to watch. You are right. It is up to individuals to take care of xyz values. And they cannot decide for all individuals. That is why we must object the Ban.

And coming to your psychoanalysis. I would rather reserve my comments. It is a "cliche' to mention Freud. We all have grown up reading him. And about "The Blue Genius wants a free society or he wants to control proliferation of media like pornography and nudity on TV and Internet.", it's the former. Wonder how did you come to a conclusion of the later part? You need some psychoanalysis done on yourself :p

"To think that sex education can prevent AIDS is a fallacy. The Blue Genius is contradicting himself here. On one hand he says that one doesn’t have to teach anything to the teenagers because they know more than the adults. On the other hand, he wants to promote ‘awareness’ as though the kids don’t get to see news coverage screaming that millions are dying of the dreaded pestilence. Such education will at best serve like the statutory warning on a packet of cigarettes."

Now, i do not completely agree with you here. There is a BIG difference between teenagers and school children. Teenagers learn by trial and error because no one tells them what it is in school.  It seems you are against the idea. Now what does the  "news coverage" screaming that millions are dying of the dreaded pestilence really say to kids? Nothing. Kids need to be explained the meaning because it is the only time they will try to understand. Later, like teenagers, they too will treat "awareness" as statutory warning.

This is similar to your own statement "Let’s say that a man has three sons and that two of them have gone astray. If we were to follow The Blue Genius’ argument then we should let the other too go bad!....". Just because "a person who is so frustrated that he wants to visit a prostitute will not worry about AIDS,
even if you put a poster in every brothel." does not mean we do not tell our children about it.

Lastly, "Wonder how The Blue Genius’ son would react when he reads the article written by his father, fifteen years hence?".

Let me tell you. You worry too much. The way he reacts is his problem. If i assume that you are my son, i can see that you are not so pleased. All i can ask my son is to read more to know about his father.

"The whole point of this article is that moral standards are better controlled by individuals than by the society or the Govt." -- You said it.

First things first. The Blue Genius must learn to moderate his language while posting a blog. It is not gentlemanly to use obscene and unparliamentary words in a public domain. I am surprised that editors of Sulekha have let such usage remain for public viewing.

The issues raised by The Blue Genius are valid but nothing original, in the sense that this topic has consumed reams of paper and the end is not in sight. He has also thrown in too many subjects, each worthy of separate discussion, though all of them will come under the umbrella of ‘sex’. He has linked “Sex education and AIDS”, “Sexual promiscuity and pornography” and “Moral policing by the authorities” as one issue.

A bit of psycho-analysis to begin with. Freud will tell you that the base emotion of every human being consists of sexual libido and aggression. He called it the “id” and said that this primal urge is controlled by “ego” and “super ego” as necessary to live in a ‘civilized’ society. The suppressions and repressions take their toll and depending upon the individuals’ self-control, manifest themselves in many ways. Even creativity, according to Freud is a release of this primordial energy. “The only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it” said Oscar Wilde and so the Western Society tries sexual permissiveness hoping that it will help relieve the repression. It doesn’t seem to have met with much success because cases of rape and sexual abuse are more prevalent in those societies than ours and seem to be increasing in number all the time. All forms of ‘freedom’ like casual sex, one night stands, living together without marriage,  availability of sex toys – nothing has helped to relieve the repression. The present day youth are subject to too many pressures - to conform, to succeed, to be a winner all the time – and the increasing sexual promiscuity (as a release) only proves Freud’s theory. Pornography is only a medium facilitating release of the repression of not being able to touch; seeing has replaced touching. It is not clear whether The Blue Genius wants a free society or he wants to control proliferation of media like pornography and nudity on TV and Internet. His colourful language suggests that he is too upset by the ban on FTV.

Spare a thought as to why AIDS has hit and more severely. The disease is spreading faster in populous countries than the sparsely populated nations. It is Nature’s way of controlling and checking population. It is nothing but Malthusian Theory in operation. To think that sex education can prevent AIDS is a fallacy. Such education will at best serve like the statutory warning on a packet of cigarettes. A smoker will never look at it; likewise, a person who is so frustrated that he wants to visit a prostitute will not worry about AIDS, even if you put a poster in every brothel.

Countries like do nothing to control population. “We two ours two” campaign was started when we couldn’t afford two children per couple. Now we can’t afford one child and now we talk about “We two, Ours one”. Such propaganda serves no purpose and should be seen as a waste of tax payers’ money as even educated couples still opt for two children. Realisation that the resources of the world are limited and that everybody has to do their bit to preserve these meager resources does not dawn on them. The point is, hoping that sex education will curb spread of AIDS is like hoping that a cloth around the spout of a tap will check the leak. The control should be elsewhere.

The Blue Genius’ tirade against the Government ban on FTV is self-defeating. He himself is pointing out the proliferation of free sex and pornography everywhere but when the Govt. does something, he is crying foul. There are two issues involved here. One, can the Govt. control everything as a moral policeman? It can control only what is within its powers. Second, if it is conceded that FTV is airing obscene shows, why object the ban? Just because there are other channels/avenues available for youngsters to get spoilt, it does not mean that the authorities should close its eyes to what FTV is doing. Let’s say that a man has three sons and that two of them have gone astray. If we were to follow The Blue Genius’ argument then we should let the other too go bad!

The whole point of this article is that moral standards are better controlled by individuals than by the society or the Govt. The society is not a nine-headed hydra but is made up of individuals like you and me. If it has been corrupted, then we are responsible for it. If we cannot instill better values to our children, who can? Is it fair to expect the Govt. to do it? Creating awareness is not the job of the Govt. but the individual. It is high time we accept responsibility instead of conveniently blaming the Govt. for everything.

Finally, awareness cannot be created by using foul language to get your point across. Wonder how The Blue Genius’ son would react when he reads the article written by his father, fifteen years hence?

Dear Blue,

I completely agree with your views!

Banning channels is no way to police the children! they have enough and more exposure around them...what needs to be done is to curb the problem from the root!

good post!

dear blue

your thoughts are perfect, no one knows what are going around us.  anyway in my views if the restrictions are huge. then the youth thoughts also change and think why cant we try for that. if it is open to everyone. surely they felt thats all nothing special in that

Orthodox or conservative parents contained this menace for long by not allowing boys and girls to  mix freekly ,read or see pornographic matters..They were kept like caged tigers. Many may say that the parents were wrong to impose such restrictions on youths. But now when the caged tigers are set free  they are turning man eaters. Why worry so long as  the youths enjoy life without any restrictions? They learn sex in their own way without the sex education. However ,I do not find anything wrong in satiating one's cravings by FTV ,porn stuffs, etc  provided  the youths indulge with good understanding .
Our youths seem to be in a state of flux and probably confused with new found freedom.

You are absolutely correct. Because we Indians will ban Smoking in public places, but we allow the companies to manufacture Cigarretes and sell them in public. .......... It happens due to our irresponsible politicians......

well maddss123, the reason for the ban is they felt the show 'midnight hot' is showing too much skin. And Fareena, i agree with you. AIDS is something that India should really worry about. These bans don't really help. Even, in ronny's case, the movie 300, with 6 year olds watching, it is parents who must be responsible.

hmm... I do doubt how many young children in india get to watch the TV at midnight in liberty. If they can get that much freedom, then they probably will have more ways to get what they want! But in case of adults, we dont need other people telling us what we must watch and what we must not.

  maddss123 posted 1 year ago

what's the reason for the ban?

Something appropriate to time. Your article. Then whole thing is  all about pure commercial business. The actual issues are brushed inside the carpet. It will come out. In its time.

If you dont care about morals, you dont need any regulation or discipline or decency.  I am sure muslims and christians have lower incidence of AIDS than the permissive Hindus who are being exploited by commercial porn profiteers.

Around 5.5 million of South Africa's 47 million people are infected with HIV, the second highest rate in the world after India.
There is still a degree of stigma attached to AIDS and the families of victims often try to fudge the cause of prolonged illness or death.
South African statisticians have said that doctors were generally loathe to attribute AIDS as the cause of death, making it difficult for them to compile the number of AIDS-related mortalities.

The Deadly Disease.
December 1 was World AIDS Day - and the day to reflect on some grim statistics. Numbers released recently project 5.1 million in India infected with AIDS, with over 2 million of them being women. Interestingly, the sex-worker population is a very small percentage of that. With the current rate of growth, projections are that India may have the largest numbers of AIDS patients in any country outside Africa.

Twelve out of the 15 countries with the highest rate of TB are in Africa, where the epidemic of AIDS increases vulnerability to TB and undercuts the ability of health systems to respond. TB patients are seldom checked to see if they also have HIV.

Paul Nunn, director of the World Health Organization's program STOP TB, said the key with AIDS patients is to make sure they receive "a full course of treatment right to the end" of their lives.
"If that is not happening, you are letting the patient down and putting the community at risk," Nunn said.
------------
Now India has surpassed South Africa with much less total population.
Following is the text of  kalam's address to the members of both Houses of Parliament on the occasion of World AIDS Day at New Delhi on December 1st 2006.

HIV Free India: A Mission
While I am with you Honourable Members of Parliament on World AIDS Day, I realize for our country the important current health mission is to combat TB, water borne diseases like Diarrhea, and vector borne diseases like Malaria apart from cardiac diseases and cancer. However, for the last few years HIV/AIDS is threatening to become a silent killer, since infection to recognition of fatal disease symptom takes a decade.

Today, the thoughts on HIV/AIDS relating to my experiences in two situations, which I am going to discuss have important messages for all of us on how to encounter the type of problems, that HIV affected persons are going through in real life. I would like to discuss the topic "HIV Free India: A Mission".

But the point I really wanted to raise is that we, the people, are not giving the importance and seriousness this particular cause deserves. We are raising are voices on trivial issues compared to this problem.
